The inovative structure is designed to provide, in theory, a green city with solar power and hydropower.

An interesting way of supporting sustainability was found by a team of British designers and artist. They came up with a floating tourist attraction that will also attract solar power in Copenhagen Harbor as the Danish city plans to become carbon-neutral until 2025.

The giant sea duck shaped structure is as high as 12-story.

Constructed from lightweight steel and wrapped in solar panels, the “energy duck” could collect the rays of sun during the day and at night could bask the harbor in LED lights that change color in rhythm with the hydro turbines inside it, as the blog designboom says.

So the city’s visitors could be able to cherish the shows of lights from a distance, but also they could get on board of the energy duck and take a look at the inside work of it.

The giant bird was designed and constructed with the help of the designers and artists Pochee, Adam Khan, Louis Leger, and Patrick Fryer in a competition lead by Land Art Generator Initiative, a project that has the purpose to bring together art and sustainable design in order to discover more solutions regarding renewable energy.

Someday, this beautiful concept could be a reality.

Apple is also planning to use solar and geothermal energy for a manufacturing site in the U.S., a plant in Mesa, Arizona that produces sapphire glass.

“We are aware that almost 70% of our carbon footprint is in our supply chain,” Jackson said. “We are actively working right now on the facilities that we have here in the United States”.

This new investments represent a reversal for the company that faced a lot of critics for the working environment and the toxic chemicals dependence especially in Chinese factories and for the use of carbon-based sources as coal.

Google to give $1 Million in Portable Renewable Energy Source Challenge

Search engine is giving a $1 Million prize for the construction of a compact idea for turning green energy into a power source that can be utilized in the house.

Google, together with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), has begun a ‘Little Box Challenge’ to come up with and construct a kW-scale power inverter, that can be useful to transform in renewable energy, meaning solar and wind, until turning it into convenient current for houses and automobiles.

The competition is challenging because the new object needs to not be bigger than a little laptop, meaning maximum roughly 1/10th of the current size.

“We are looking for someone to build a kW-scale inverter with a power density greater than 50W per cubic inch. Do it best and we will give you a million bucks,” Google said in a blog post.

Google is certain that this will help “change the future of electricity”.

“We believe that inverters will become increasingly important to our economy and environment as solar PV, batteries, and similar power sources continue their rapid growth,” Google added.

It added that the innovation coming in will have wide applicability across areas, will increase the performance drive down price tags and open up new use cases.

Google announced the construction of a smaller power inverter could provide a bigger number of hoses that function with green energy, more practical electrical grids distributed wisely and could also bring a benefits to the isolated areas on earth.

“A smaller inverter could help create low-cost microgrids in remote parts of the world. Or allow you to keep the lights on during a blackout via your electric car’s battery. Or enable advances we haven’t even thought of yet,” Eric Raymond from Google’s Green Team reports.

The due date for the competition is this year’s September and the winner of the contest will be unveiled in the first month of 2016.

Microsoft announces they will power their datacenters with green energy

The soft giant said they will power a number of datacenters with wind power. In order to do that, they signed a 20-year contract with a wind farm from Illinois.

The deal with EDF Renewable Energy is very much alike with the one the company signed last fall for a wind farm from Texax.

This Pilot Hill Wind Project is among the company’s biggest wind investment until now since it is 60% larger than the one in Texas, Keechi Wind Project

The leas with EDF Renewable Energy will see Microsoft assets up to an approximately 675,000 MWh of green energy from the 175MW wind farm every year.

Robert Bernard, Microsoft chief environmental strategist, reports in a blog post that the company is “committed to reducing our environmental footprint, and over the past two years we continue to meet our goal of becoming carbon neutral”.

“By purchasing wind, we will reduce the overall amount of emissions associated with operating Microsoft facilities and hopefully spur additional investment in renewable energy. Because the Chicago datacentre draws power from the Illinois power grid, projects like Pilot Hill help provide a non-polluting source of energy that displaces greenhouse gas emissions from conventional power.” he added.

The site construction has already begun at will be finished next year.

The senior energy campaigner at Greenpeace, David Pomerantz, believes Microsoft’s wind energy acquisition reveals that they are willing to compete with other cloud computing companies on the renewable front.

“Microsoft‘s large purchases of wind energy in Illinois and Texas, taken alongside the commitments by cloud competitors Rackspace and Google to power their respective operations with 100 per cent renewable energy, highlight the failure by Amazon Web Services to reach even the starting line in the race to build a clean cloud and green internet. As other companies move to embrace solar and wind, AWS risks losing business from customers that are beginning to expect their cloud to be powered by renewable energy” he also said.

Using solar electricity even longer

With the Sunny Boy Smart Energy, owner-operators can now use solar power even after sunset. Thanks to the integrated battery with a capacity of approximately 2 kWh, generated PV electricity that is not needed in the home can be stored for later use. Because the increase in self-consumption levels off with increasing storage capacity, the battery utilization factor decreases. In addition, thanks to the battery, virtually all generated PV energy can be used, even with active power limitation. “Our long-standing expertise in storage systems shows us time and again that the small storage battery is not only extremely viable but also affordable,” said Thierschmidt.

Sharp unveils new semi-transparent solar panels

Sharp unveils new semi-transparent solar panels with 6.8% conversion efficiency.

See-through solar panels have been a long standing dream of many, and Sharp has just given the world its first taste of the revolutionary technology.

Designed specifically for use as balcony railings and skyscraper windows, these solar panels have a semi-transparent black finish with a solar power conversion efficiency of about 6.8%.

These panels pack a maximum output of 95 watts and measure in at 4.5-feet wide by 3.2-feet tall. Now the efficiency of these panels might not match up to those conventionally used, but replacing windows with these is bound to turn just about any building greener!

Also, Sharp has not revealed the pricing details and we hope as technology progresses, these transparent panels will turn a little more efficient!

CBD Energy awarded first US commercial solar project

CBD Energy, a diversified renewables energy company, has signed its first solar PV installation contract in the United States for a reported $3.8 million.

The project is a design, engineering, procurement and construct (EPC) contract to build a solar system for a school in New Jersey and will be delivered in partnership with Westinghouse Solar, Inc.

In a written statement, CBD said the agreement is the company’s first step toward establishing itself in the US solar market. The project involves installing multiple rooftop and carport solar PV systems, to supply power to the school, and excess power to be sold back into the grid.

“The successful completion of this first solar project will be an important demonstration of CBD’s competitive advantage in a market that has significant renewable energy development,” said James Greer, a Senior Vice President with CBD Energy.

“As CBD solidifies its U.S. market presence by merging with Westinghouse Solar, we are looking forward to increasing project volume and further validating our entrance in the US market,” he said.

Project commencement is anticipated in mid-July and is expected to take approximately three months to complete.

“We are very excited to see CBD secure a market win here in the U.S. and to partner with their EPC division to make the project successful,” said Westinghouse Solar CEO Margaret Randazzo.

“Expansion to capture EPC opportunities such as this project in the U.S., and the development of international distribution opportunities for Westinghouse Solar, such as the agreement we previously announced with CBD for sales of our solar panels to Harvey Norman in Australia, are examples of the new markets and synergies we were looking for from a CBD and Westinghouse Solar business combination,” she said.

CBD Managing Director Gerry McGowan said entering the US commercial market is an important milestone for CBD, and leverages its experience from the projects we are constructing in Europe, Asia and the South Pacific.

“We are able to achieve this expansion by bringing together our engineering expertise, project management capabilities and cost effective supply chain to work with a local workforce to deliver cost efficient renewable energy solutions,” McGowen said. “Over the course of a day, CBD now has continuous operations in delivering renewable energy projects around the globe.”

The largest rooftop solar power in North America officially completed

It is known that New Jersey likes setting rooftop solar power records.

It started in 2009 when it opened the largest solar rooftop in North America (2.4 MW of capacity).After that in 2011 when Toys”R”Us got a 5.38-MW solar roof and again later in 2011 when a 9-MW solar roof was installed on a large Holt Logistics refrigerated warehouse, the Gloucester Marine Terminal.

This solar rooftop was finally completed this week.The solar rooftop project is called Riverside Renewable Energy and its costs were about $42 million, includes  27,526 photovoltaic rooftop solar panels and covers 1.1 million square feet.

Its construction started in June 2011 and was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.Riverside will give the equivalent of up to 80 percent of the Terminal’s power  demand.The system is expected to to balance out more than 8,100 tons of carbon dioxide,    around the same amount that would be balanced out by planting 400,000 trees or removing 1,200 cars from the road.

U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews affirmed that “The Riverside project is an outstanding example of how we can create jobs that move us towards cleaner, more efficient and cost-saving energy that doesn’t come from overseas” and “By partnering with the federal government, private industry is able to make strides that are good  for job creation and the economy right now, and also for a cleaner, healthier and more energy efficient future here in South Jersey and the country.”

IKEA uses 100% renewable energy

IKEA is a 100% green company, its 2011 Sustainability Report affirms its green status.

From September 2010 to August 2011 IKEA set aside approximately $670 million to invest in renewable energy which includes installations that have both been brought into operation or will be completed in the next 1.5 years.

The company’s current renewable energy portfolio will increase. Now it boasts 69 wind turbines and 124 photovoltaic (PV) projects (40 operational and 84 approved).

The company declared its future plans to add 11 new PV solar projects to its current portfolio. The aim is to aid rooftops of each of the brand’s stores with solar PV panels and generate approximately 7000KW of clean energy. The base of this future planning is strengthened by IKEA’s success at the completion of its geothermal project at Denver, Colorado.

In a separate announcement, released just hours before the Sustainability Report, IKEA said it has plugged in its 15th solar energy project in the United States. REC Solar installed 4,984 solar panels atop IKEA’s 148,200 square foot store located in College Park, Maryland. The solar panels will combine to generate 1,196 KW of renewable energy.

IKEA is one of the most lucrative businesses on the planet, is not using this model — the retailing juggernaut owns and operates each of the systems installed on its buildings.

IKEA says it has 22 solar projects underway in the US which, when complete, will hoist the company’s solar energy portfolio to 30.8 MW.

Google – investments in green energy

Web companies like Google are also investing in renewable energy with handsome profits. Google has invested over $915 million in this sector. The company has also taken it upon itself to make use of green and sustainable energy. Some of their corporate campuses utilize photovoltaic systems for solar energy and cogeneration units that make use of landfill gas to generate electricity. Google has also completed two PPAs with a commitment to purchase renewable energy from certain sources.

Google projects:

1. The project: Large scale solar PV in California

Google has invested $94 million in Recurrent Energy, a Sacramento-based company, for solar projects. The investment wil cover four solar projects that is hoped will significantly benefit California’s energy needs.
88MW of power being produced, enough to sustain 13,000 homes.

2. The project: Clean Power Finance – providing financing for rooftop solar panels.

Startup company, Clean Power Finance, is being financed by Google to help third party installers place solar panels on rooftops as part of solar rooftop projects. The investment of $75 million will see about 10,000 homes being benefited by solar power.

3. The project: SolarCity – solar for thousands of residential rooftops. In one of the biggest investments by Google, $280million has gone into funding SolarCity for its residential solar market.

4. The project: Atlantic Wind Connection – a superhighway for clean energy transmission

Google’s 37.5 equity stake in the Atlantic Wind Connection project by Trans-Elect Development Company will be able to generate a substantial 6000MW of power to large population centers in the Mid-Atlantic region.

5. The project: Shepherd’s Flat – the world’s largest wind farm. The investment: $100 million
