EU to aim for car-free cities by 2050

The European Commission is reportedly planning to publish an ambitious transport road map next week, which will include recommendations to phase out fossil-fuelled cars by 2050.

Clean Energy Standard took a step forward in US Senate

President Barack Obama’s ambitious plans for a Clean Energy Standard (CES) that would require the US to source 80 per cent of its energy from low carbon sources by 2035 took a small but significant step forward this week after a key Senate Committee launched a form of public consultation on the proposals.

Reduced energy tax for biomass fuels

Commissioner Algirdas Semeta is expected to present a proposal to revise the Energy Taxation Directive, in a bid to create a new EU framework for CO2 taxation which could increase levies on carbon-intensive coal and reduce the tax burden on low-carbon bioethanol.

Commission urges Italy to comply with EU environmental legislation

The European Commission is asking Italy to comply with EU rules to ensure that a rehabilitation project on a former chemicals site in the Liguria region does not pose risks to health or the environment. So far Italy has failed to satisfactorily address the issue.

Renewable energy: the promotion of electricity from renewable energy sources

The European Union is creating a Community framework for promoting renewable energy sources for electricity production. It is setting an objective for renewables of a 21% contribution to electricity production and is laying down specific measures relating to evaluation of the origin of the electricity, connection to the grid and administrative measures, among others.
